After several storms weakened the structural integrity of an existing sea wall in Bloubergstrand, WSP Group Africa Consulting Engineers and CSV Construction were tasked to create a sustainable solution to protect a seaside home from stormy seas off the Cape’s Atlantic coastline.
Using a special-purpose underwater formula – AfriSam’s Aqua Beton Admixture – engineers were able to produce a good, workable concrete that could be effectively vibrated with a smooth and durable finish. The concrete mix contained a particular additive to create a stickier solution to ensure there was no break-up of concrete that would cause it to mix with salt water during pouring, ensuring a solid and economical design that promises longevity for many decades to come.
