At AfriSam, we believe in the value of people as the ultimate driver behind our business. With nearly
2 000 permanent employees our people are the core of our business. To this end we strive to create a rewarding experience for each one through the adoption of various employee benefit programmes.
Our ultimate goal is to be an employer of choice and, as such, we promote Human Resource (HR) practices that help us attract and retain the best people. For a number of years running we have been certified as a Top Employer through the Top Employers Institute. This award is based on our HR policy framework and measures performance on aspects such as benefits, learning and development, working conditions, career development, company culture and diversity.
We see employee development as an important part of each employee’s career progression in the organisation and as vital to their personal development. Together with their staff, line managers identify gaps and agree on ongoing plans to address these through various training initiatives. Our rigorous performance management approach ensures that employees are rewarded for meeting and exceeding set targets.
It’s important to us that our employees lead well-balanced lives. In this light we run comprehensive Employee Assistance Programmes that embrace all aspects of life. These deal with a host of life challenges including health, personal relationships, finances and trauma. We offer education and support in areas such as financial fitness, retirement planning and HIV/AIDS.
Our “Zero Harm to People” campaign highlights our commitment to the health and safety of our employees. We place strong emphasis on a health and safety culture with stringent rules and regulations which are as effective in their home lives as they are in the workplace. To ensure maximum compliance we continually run programmes which form part of employee performance ratings.
Our health and safety programmes and principles are aligned with international standards but are tailored to suit our people and our production and distribution requirements. These are extended to our suppliers and contractors that work on or visit our premises. Through the “safety drive report” programme, contractors’ vehicles are checked regularly for roadworthiness while their drivers are trained for road safety awareness.
Our staff are an integral part of our business and we do everything possible to ensure that they have the necessary skills and tools to contribute to the success of the company.
